The Recipe
My name is Amelia Smith, and I started Buttercream & Bean in 2022. Buttercream & Bean is a 100% Vegan Cottage Food Bakery based in Bloomington Illinois. I have been vegan for over 20 years and have been baking on and off for most of my adult life. I have a passion for baking things that not only look good, but taste great too. I love being able to provide tasty treats to vegans and people that may have dairy, egg, or other allergies. Knowing that my treats make them happy is the reason I do this!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is everything vegan?
Yes, everything is 100% vegan including all the sugar used in my baked goods. I do occasionally use “accidentally vegan” items such as Oreos, and cannot attest for the sugar used in those products.
What does it mean to be a Cottage Food Kitchen?
The Cottage Food Law allows food entrepreneurs the opportunity to prepare non-hazardous baked goods and other food items in their home kitchens to be sold directly to consumers.
What does vegan mean?
Vegan foods are any foods that are not made of, or do not contain, animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, seafood and honey.
Do you offer gluten-free items?
Since I work in my home kitchen and I do consume items that contain gluten, I am not a certified gluten-free space. I do produce some items that do not contain gluten, but if you have celiac disease or are highly sensitive to gluten, I do not recommend consuming my products. I do my best to clean between batches and use only certified gluten-free flours, sugars, and oats.
I’m not vegan, can you make me a non-vegan cake?
No, I keep a completely vegan kitchen since I myself am vegan. I can recommend a number of other non-vegan bakeries if you would like a non-vegan cake.
Do you have a storefront?
No, I bake out of my home and don’t keep an inventory of baked goods on hand. You can find me at the Downtown Bloomington Farmer’s Market weekly during the summer and monthly in the off season.
